SEEK, DON’T STRIVE

(Mat 6:33) "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Does there seem to be way more bills than thrills in your life lately? I had a good laugh the other day when I saw a friend get his mail. When he got back from his mailbox he said it was going to be a good day because there weren’t any bills! Can you relate?

Jesus said not to worry about what to eat or drink or what to wear. He said that those who don’t have a heavenly Father do that kind of thing. He said to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth. He encouraged his followers to keep themselves from covetousness (mammon), and trust God for what you need here on earth. He provides food for the birds of the air and clothing for the lilies of the field, and we are a lot more important than they. We are to trust God for today and not worry about tomorrow. (Read Mat 6:19-34)

Can we live out the Sermon on the Mount in an economy and lifestyle like ours? Yes, because God’s truth stays the same in all times and cultures. The Lord’s resources never exhaust themselves. When the money is low, here is what we can keep in mind to encourage us:

- (Hag 2:8) 'The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,' says the LORD of hosts.

- (Psa 50:10) For every beast of the forest is Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills.

- (Phil 4:19) And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

When we are in financial straits, we are to seek, not strive. Here’s how the psalmist prayed in his trouble: (Psa 70:5) But I am poor and needy; Make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.

May I encourage you to have a good talk with the Lord about the needs in your life. I guarantee that you will feel so much better. Then give the Lord room to provide for you. He’ll do it in a way that will blow your mind. You’ll either laugh in wonder, or cry in His lovingkindness, or shout in triumph. You are His child and He loves to provide for His own. And you’ll be able to have a good day whether your mailbox is filled with bills or blessings!
