(Exo 14:15) And the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward.
The direction of the Christian life is always forward. Yes, there might be times of regressing or getting off on rabbit trails, or even backsliding, but then it’s “onward she goes!”
When the children of Israel were up against the Red Sea with the Egyptians pursuing, God said His people were to go forward. What? How can you go forward when you’re up against a wall? But God would be proving His power to the people by parting the Red Sea. They would walk over to the other side in victory. The Lord does the same thing for us as well. Nothing can hinder our advancing when God is leading us! (Rom 8:38-39) For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We have so much work to do for God’s kingdom before we leave planet earth. There’s no time for any other direction than moving out front. It’s time for a lot of us to pick up the pace! (2 Kings 4:24) Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, “Drive, and go forward; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” We’ve been oh so slow in the Christian race, it’s time to kick it into gear and start leaving a vapor trail!
Some people rely too heavily on feelings. If they don’t sense God, then they get insecure and start slowing down. (Job 23:8) “Look, I go forward, but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him. Job did that, and you can’t blame him. He had been through so much adversity. How can you feel God when all you feel is fear or pain? But sometimes we just have to “faith it!” (2 Cor 5:7) For we walk by faith, not by sight.
It takes sheer obedience sometimes to follow God. Everything in you is wanting to take the easy road that just meanders through the meadows. But is that a proper depiction of the Christian life? Jesus said the road would be difficult and lonely. (Mat 7:14) If we follow our own heart it always leads to the rear. (Jer 7:24) Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but followed the counsels and the dictates of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward.
If you have been getting off your direction lately, it’s nice to know that today is a new day where you can get serious about the things of God. No matter how much time you have lost on the road, with God’s help you can get right back on track! (Eze 39:22) So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day forward. From now on there’s only one direction to take. LET’S GO FORWARD!
