Therefore . . . let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. (Heb 12:1)
Have you seen those signs that say “LOSE WEIGHT FAST” along with a phone number? They’re usually tacked onto a poll in a bright color. You sit there at the red light and ponder if it really could be true. You wonder what they’re offering because you’ve tried everything from the grapefruit diet to herbal wrap. You get kind of skeptical but then you wonder if this sign offer could really work. Give it a try? Green light . . . gotta go! Funny what we think about at those three-minute stops.
The writer of Hebrews said there is another kind of weight that we are supposed to drop. And that’s the weight of sin. The ancient Olympic runners used to wear weights on their ankles in practice to build up their legs and also to make their legs feel light when it was time for the race. Like body pounds there are ensnaring sins that we seem to keep putting back on. These are those besetting sins that come so easy for us but are so hard to shed.
But how do cut the fat in our walk with the Lord? It says to lay aside those weights of sin. Take them off. They are slowing us down. They impede our progress. We’ve got to give them up like the toddler must give up that pacifier or blanket. It’s time to grow up and move forward in our walk with the Lord. Time to shed those pounds so we can run that race before us. It might seem hopeless because we seem to put those pounds back on so quickly, but the Lord can help us do it. It might not be LOSE WEIGHT FAST but more like LOSE WEIGHT FACT!
You were born to be a winner in Christ: (Phil 4:13) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. And that’s the “skinny” we all need to know. Wow . . . you’re looking’ good already!
