(Isa 35:10) And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Do you sigh a lot? Maybe you don’t even notice. Now if you sneeze, you notice, and so do others. And you might even get a blessing out of it in response. But a sigh is different. A sigh is quiet and sometimes imperceptible. If it is observed it is not usually commented on. You just figure someone is relaxing after an active and busy schedule. But the Bible says one day all sighing will flee away. So, let’s take a fresh look at something we do that might reveal something about ourselves more than we know.
Here’s what scripture says about the reasons why a person might sigh:
· PERSONAL PROBLEMS WEARING YOU DOWN - (Job 3:24) For my sighing comes before I eat, and my groanings pour out like water.
· PERSISTENT UNMET NEEDS - (Psa 12:5) "For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, Now I will arise," says the LORD; "I will set him in the safety for which he yearns."
· THE EFFECTS OF SINFUL BEHAVIOR IN YOUR OWN LIFE - (Psa 31:10) For my life is spent with grief, And my years with sighing; My strength fails because of my iniquity, And my bones waste away.
· GRIEF OVER THE SINFUL BEHAVIOR OF OTHERS - (Eze 21:6) "Sigh therefore, son of man, with a breaking heart, and sigh with bitterness before their eyes.
When we, or others, don’t observe a sigh, God does! He hears our sighings and gives the proper x-ray reading of it. (Psa 38:9) Lord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You.
One day it just hit me how often I sighed. I then started to see it as an indicator of what I was going through. I told the Lord I didn’t want to sigh anymore. I wanted to believe Him for the strength I needed to get through each day. Then it came to me. Singing can replace sighing. When I’m ready to let off some breath in a sigh . . . I can use that same breath and praise the Lord! (Psa 150:6) Let everything that has breath praise the LORD . . . This will bring joy and gladness to me . . . the very thing I need to enjoy the life God has given me to live.
You know what? It works!! (Psa 104:33) I will sing to the LORD as long as I live . . .
