(Psa 90:10, 12) The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away . . . 12 So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
There’s a lot of talk these days about mid-life crisis. A lot of people come to the middle of their lives and make a fresh evaluation of their progress thus far. The thought is that if any changes are going to be made they better be made soon because life is moving so quickly and will be over before you know it. For some, just a few minor changes are in order. For others, it’s a real eye-opener and more radical changes are made. Some change careers, some go back to school, some leave their spouse for greener pastures, and so on. For some it’s like a second adolescence and they feel they are losing their youth so they say they better go out and get that convertible sport car and start cruising coast highway as their bald spot is sun burning on top of their head!
But mid-life doesn’t have to be a mid-life crisis. For the Christian, we realize we are not so much getting older, but closer to the coming of the Lord and to the glories of heaven. Moses said we have 70 to 80 years to live so this should make us live life wisely. When you get older you realize you have less time on this side than that side. Instead of having a crisis, it can make you reevaluate the time you have left and make the adjustments needed to maximize that remaining time. Mid-life should present Christ, not a crisis. It’s a time to realize your mortality, realize this world just isn’t it, know your body will be exchanged for a new one in heaven someday, and then go into your remaining years with new wisdom to serve the Lord and do His will.
When you are younger you want to be older. When you’re older you want to be younger. But when you’re a Christian it alters your perspective about aging because you know someday time will be no more. So for us older folks out there this is a great encouragement. Let’s be encouraged in life. Let’s give it all we got for the Lord. There’s no crisis when you know you’re going to live forever!
