CARRY ME

(Deu 1:31) 'and in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.'

It’s a common sight. There’s a couple walking together with a young child. They’ve been out for a while. The child’s little legs are giving out. He looks up at his father and says, “Daddy . . . carry me!” Dad bends over and picks the child up who then immediately sinks into the human pillow. Mr. Sandman then meets the child and ushers him into the theatre of high definition images displayed on the back of drooping and drawn eyelids. If you happen to be walking behind the family, it makes for such a pleasant sight. There’s this precious bundle . . . limp arms, head angled, and mouth open. Not a care in the world. And it all came with a few words spoken . . . “Daddy, carry me!”

Tired? Worn? Schlepping those feet? Don’t you know you’re been adopted into the family of God? Now you can cry out “Abba, Father!” (Gal 4:5-6) Like the children of Israel in the wilderness, He sees you on that road of life, exhausted from all your toil, persevering under the weighty load of this life. He is strengthening your legs for greater things ahead. He is stretching your endurance because He has so many places to take you and you must be fit for the journey (Jer 12:5; Hab 3:19). But He also knows how much your feeble knees can take (Heb 12:12-13). He loves you and won’t give you more than you can handle (1 Cor 10:13).

Weary child, look up into the gracious gaze of your Heavenly Father. See His strong arms that are there to pick you up and hold you and keep you (Deu 33:27; Isa 40:31). There bury yourself into His love where sin and strife will cease to harass. Where perfect peace will restore and refresh. Now rest in His strength to guide you and provide for you. He’ll see to it that you’ll reach your destination safe and sound. That’s His promise. That’s His delight. How trustworthy is our God . . . and He cares for you! (1 Pet 5:7)

“Oh, my Father . . . I am weary . . . carry me!”
