BURDENED DOWN

The LORD upholds all who fall, And raises up all who are bowed down. (Psa 145:14)

They’re having a problem these days with kids whose backpacks are so heavy that they’re experiencing back problems. It’s not something I can relate to because I don’t remember having a lot of required items to carry home from school. And when I was in Jr. High and High School we had lockers for all your books and things. But I guess things have changed and it seems like every kid you see has a backpack of some sort. And they’re huge! They have so many books and items stuffed in there. Some of the backpacks even look bigger than the kids themselves! And now to hear that some of them are having back problems. It just doesn’t seem right.

But it’s not only a student problem. It’s a Christian problem as well. You see, a lot of us as God’s kids are going around with a multitude of burdens in our spiritual backpacks. And after a while we get so weighed down we start experiencing problems in our lives. We have burdens of concern for our loved ones. We have burdens of circumstances that aren’t going our way. We have financial burdens and physical burdens. Then we can add into the backpack of life our own personal burden of sin and waywardness. Life is overtaxing us, and we would love to have that burden removed but it seems the straps are so tight and the weight so heavy that we need assistance. We seek others for help, but they’re so saddled as well with their own burdens. Soon it seems like it’s just the thing to do as human beings, to just be weighted down . . . to just have scoliosis of the spine and related soul problems.

A popular phrase is “God helps those who help themselves”. But what about when you can’t help yourself and your burdens seem so heavy? That’s where God specializes! He waits for us to give up and give in, and that’s when He takes over. He upholds all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down. The Bible says, “Cast your burden on the LORD, And He shall sustain you . . . (Psa 55:22) Jesus took the burden of sin from us at Calvary and He lives today to free us from those burdens of life that seem to naturally stuff themselves into our backpacks. And when we are set free from those burdens we can help others who need a hand because the Bible also declares, “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Gal 6:2)

May the Lord lift our burdens, and may our improved spiritual posture speak of the God who loves us and lifts up all who are bowed down!
