(2 Tim 1:5) when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.
Notice how Timothy’s faith came down to him through his grandmother, and then his mother, and then to him. That’s what’s called “hand-me down faith”! There’s a lot you can hand down to your kids: Your good character, your sense of humor, your love for sports, nature, or the arts. You can even hand down to them tangible objects such as family heirlooms, antiques, mementos, and the like. But the greatest thing you can pass on to your children is your faith in Jesus Christ.
Timothy was a fine specimen of a godly young man. Paul said there was no other Christian worker like Timothy who was so humble and helpful to him (Phil 2:20-22). This is because his mother raised him up under the influence of genuine faith in the Lord and in the training of the Scriptures (2 Tim 3:15).
Moms, you’ve got an awesome job in raising your children! We salute you and honor you and say thank-you for your dedication and devotion to your children. And we encourage you to keep giving your children Jesus so that one day they too will be like Timothy and follow the faith of their mother. Then they will give to their own children that same hand-me-down faith!
O give us homes built firm upon the Savior,
Where Christ is Head and Counselor and Guide.
Where every child is taught His love and favor,
And gives his heart to Christ, the crucified.
