A GOOD REPUTATION

(Pro 22:1) A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.

What is better than riches and silver and gold? A good reputation. It’s not what the world is into. They’d rather have the gold, wouldn’t they? Our society is money-driven. Greed is the creed. But Christians are into character . . . being like Christ. Having the moral fiber and the faith that includes virtue (2 Pet 1:5). It might not make you popular, but it will gain you respect in the long run as people observe that godly make-up of your life. But most of all your reputation will glorify the Lord and let people know there are still some of us around that haven’t sold out to the world’s compromise!

Cornelius had a good reputation. Notice the reasons why: (Acts 10:22) "Cornelius the centurion, a just man, one who fears God and has a good reputation among all the nation of the Jews . . . Did you catch it? He was just and feared God.

Having a good reputation also opens up doors for service. (Acts 6:3) "Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. A good reputation then is better than talent or giftedness in God’s economy.

A good reputation can also be ruined so we have to be careful about even the smallest of moral negotiations. (Eccl 10:1) Dead flies putrefy the perfumer's ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor.

Your good reputation also will be your best defense when you are falsely accused or gossiped about. You don’t have to go around and defend yourself against the mud slinging about your name. Leave it to the Lord and to your good reputation (1 Pet 2:23). The accusations won’t stick. People will know you better than that.

I’m so glad character is still chic. Solomon said, “A good name is better than precious ointment . . .” (Eccl 7:1). That’s the kind of fragrance I want to wear!
