I AM (1)

Updated: Oct 17, 2018

(Exo 3:13-14) Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is His name?' what shall I say to them?" 14 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'"

I AM is the translation of the Hebrew word JEHOVAH (or YAHWEH). The name JEHOVAH comes from the verb TO BE and includes the three tenses of that verb: past, present, and future. The name therefore means: He who was, is, and is to come; in other words, the Eternal One.

Different words attach themselves to the name of JEHOVAH throughout the Bible, what are called compound names for God. The emphasis is that God is always there for you and will be everything you’ll ever need. Ponder these references of JEHOVAH in the Bible and be blessed:

-When you need healing: He is JEHOVAH-RAPHA, "the Lord that heals". (Exo 15:26)

-When you are being hassled by the enemy: He is JEHOVAH-NISSI, "the Lord our banner." (Exo 17:8-15)

-When you are burdened with care: He is JEHOVAH-SHALOM, "the Lord our peace." (Judg. 6:24)

-When you are having a hard time finding your way: He is JEHOVAH RA'AH, "the Lord my shepherd." (Psa 23:1)

-When you feel conscious of your sin and in need of forgiveness: He is JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU, "the Lord our righteousness." (Jer 23:6)

-When you have an urgent need: He is JEHOVAH-JIREH, "the Lord who provides." (Gen 22:14)

-When you long for a sense of His presence: He is JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH, "the Lord is there." (Eze 48:35)

Whatever you need today, call on the name of the LORD (JEHOVAH). I will take up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the LORD. (Psa 116:13)
